Järvenpää Art Museum has comprehensive art collections, which encompasses art by Lake Tuusula artists’ community members Eero Järnefelt (1863–1937) and Venny Soldan-Brofelt (1863–1945). In 2023 we are celebrating the 160th birthday of both artists.

The exhibition also pays attention to younger visitors. At the desk request for a basket, which contains activities for children. One can find delightful details in surprising places. Can you find Venny’s studio?
School + Art – Educating the Senses

“Let us be joyful and grateful that we have such a lively association – ‘Art in Schools’ – which has taken on the task of bringing this ray of sunshine to every school and instilling its influence in the heart of every resident there!” (Nuori Voima, 1908)
The School + Art exhibition presents an overview of art in schools from the early 20th century to the present day. The role of Venny Soldan-Brofeldt (1863-1945) as a pioneer of Finnish visual arts education is deservedly highlighted. Soldan-Brofeldt co-founded the Art in Schools association in 1906, with the main goal of ensuring high-quality art in the daily lives of all children.
The exhibition explores the types of art selected for schools at different times. How has school art changed as the images around us have increased? What kind of art has been deemed suitable for school walls? The exhibition includes two artworks recently created for schools in Järvenpää. The real-time video work ”Common Forest” by the artist group IC-98 at Järvenpää Co-educational School offers a thought-provoking perspective on nature and time. The new version of the work at the art museum invites viewers to explore the annual cycle after a forest fire and prompts reflection on biodiversity. Maria Duncker’s sculptural and social space, ”Art Cottage,” is located on the Harjula campus. The exhibition features its wooden sister piece, ”Eyes of the Forest.”
Exhibition artists: Nils Jacob Blommér, Clémentine-Hélène Dufau, Maria Duncker, Magnus Enckell, Pekka Halonen, IC-98, Eero Järnefelt, Ida Silfverberg, Hugo Simberg, Venny Soldan-Brofeldt, Louis Sparre, Ellen Thesleff, and Martta Wendelin.
School + Art – Educating the Senses At Järvenpää Art Museum from October 6, 2024, to February 23, 2025.
The exhibition is part of the Year of Education theme events. #education2024. The exhibition has received funding from Museovirasto.
