An artist home that sprang to life around a grand piano

Villa Kokkonen is unique among the works of Alvar Aalto: a home designed for a composer.

Architect Alvar Aalto’s (1898–1976) masterpiece Villa Kokkonen was completed in 1969 at the northern end of Lake Tuusula. It was the home of composer Joonas Kokkonen. He lived in the house until his death. Since 1998, the building has been owned by the City of Järvenpää.

Villa Kokkonen is one of the few private residential buildings designed by Alvar Aalto. The dark façade hides a bright interior full of unique details; the curved shape repeats from the façade’s awning recurs in the wall of the entryway and the house’s fireplaces. The interior decoration consists of both custom-made fixtures as well as furniture by Artek.

Guided Tours in Summer Season (May – September) 2025

• Tuesday to Sunday at 10:30 AM and 1:00 PM in Finnish
• At 2:00 PM in English
• Duration of the tour is approximately 45 minutes
• We highly recommend to book your visit in advance
• Visits inside Villa Kokkonen are only possible with guided tours.
• You can visit independently the courtyard of Villa Kokkonen and the museum shop during museum opening hours

• The site is fairly accessible
• One disabled parking space in front of the site
• The nearest parking lot is about 100 meters away
• Access via a path with soft ash, low thresholds at the entrances

• 18 € for seniors, students, unemployed
• Free for under 18s
• Museum Card and Kaikukortti accepted
